Yeah, there's not any real information in that bug report.  Feel free to reopen this if it's clarified.

FYI, some people have reported that SDL can't detect their joysticks because they don't have permission to access /dev/input/event*

Maybe that's the problem here?

OK, I will suggest that and close the original bug report.

It was opened more than 3 years ago, I forwarded ~1.5 years ago, and the original submitter didn't clarify anything since, so I don't think that much more can be done -- specially now that SDL 1.2 will not see more updates.
